Italy has both a private and public education system.

Education in Italy is compulsory from 6-16 years of age. The education system is of five stages:

Kindergarten or preschool, known as materna, is not compulsory in Italy.

Primary school: Primary schooling in Italy is for five years. The primary school commonly consists of three years of non-compulsory nursery school. The students acquire a basic knowledge of Italian, English, mathematics, natural sciences, history, geography, social studies, and physical education. Some of the schools also offer Spanish or French, musical arts, and visual arts.

Lower secondary school: Secondary education has two stages: middle school and high school. Secondary school lasts for eight years. Middle school lasts for three years, and high school lasts for five years from the 14-19 years age group. Every schooling involves an exam at the end of the final year. It helps to gain a degree and pursue further education.

Upper secondary school and university: Upper secondary and university education is according to the bologna process. And has a 3-cycle system:

  • First cycle: bachelor’s degree and single-cycle degrees
  • Second cycle: master’s degrees and 1st level vocational masters.
  • Third cycle: doctorate specialization school 2nd level vocational masters.

Italian universities offer many scholarships to international students that allow them to study for free in Italy. The country encourages international students through various programs such as Invest your Talent in Italy(IYT) and yearly Italian government scholarships by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
